Summary[]

10 days since Shinichi has shrunk, while staying at the Mouri Detective Agency. A surgeon,Ogawa, comes in with a request to find out why he has been receiving mysterious gifts (toys, money, and Morning Glorys) for the past two years. During the investigation, Ran grows suspicious of Conan's behavior and considers he may be Shinichi. They find out that Ogawa's son (Yuuta) is in danger as the gifts are mementos of a patient who had died several years ago while under Ogawa's care. They successfully stop the gift-sender before he kills Yuuta and the case is settled. Shinichi sets up a plan to have Professor Agasa pretend to be him over the phone while Conan is in the room with Ran, thus removing her suspicions.

Plot[]

The episode starts out with Ran out grocery shopping with Conan and his friends. The kids find out that Ran knows Shinichi and start poking fun of the possibility of the two being in a relationship. When Ran gets home, she is reminded that it has been awhile since she has heard from him and begins to wonder if he lost his touch since he has been supposedly "on a case" for a long-time which is rare for the high-school detective.

The two then hear a knock and go to open the door. They are met with Ogawa (with a cut on his pointer-finger) who crashes into Ran and Conan, spilling a pile of boxes he was carrying. He reveals he has been receiving toys and money (with no return address) every month for the past two years. It is revealed he has a five-year old son named Yuuta and Ogawa himself is a surgeon - as the two slanted marks on his fingers are signs he tightly holds a thread with his index fingers while performing an operation and sewing up the patients. This arouses suspicion from Ran has Shinichi did the same thing to the lady in the Roller Coaster Murder Case (where he deduced she was a gymnast based on the blisters on her hand). Her suspicions are temporarily put to rest as Conan is startled by a jack-in-a-box. Ogawa reveals the latest gift - no toys but only a lump sum of money with a letter saying "I have finished paying the 25 million yen. In exchange, I will come and get it" - leaving both Mouri and Ogawa confused. Conan on the other hand is still looking at the toys and notices none of the boxes have barcodes and some of them are damaged/broken. Mouri thinks this is a prank but Conan believes something is off. Meanwhile, Ran notices that Conan seems to be directing the case so far and keeps her eye on Conan.

The group make a trip to the hospital to see a painting (worth 20 million yen) they suspect the gift-giver may to be after. We see that the hospital is very large and learn that Ogawa came to the hospital (3 years ago) from a very small hospital located in a rural area. At this moment, a nurse carrying a Morning Glory (which Mouri says is rare with how cold it is) comes to tell Ogawa another one has arrived. We learn it is from the same sender and they are delivered annually on February 19th. Ran reveals the word for Morning Glory means "Short-lived love" and they consider the possibility of an past affair. Since Yuuta (the son's) birthday is in December, Conan suggests taking a look at the patient records to see if someone visited on February 19th. Ogawa provides 3 years worth of patient records and Conan stays behind (as the rest go to see the painting), Ran ends up staying behind and peeks through the door to see Conan madly sorting through the records at a inhumane speed - not possible for a typical elementary school kid. She then thinks back to the Company President's Daughter Kidnapping Case and the Idol's Locked Room Case, specifically how Conan directed the cases and the fact he appeared the same day Shinichi disappeared. She sneaks up on Conan and asks him what he found, Conan reveals he has narrowed it down to 8 people who have anything to do with February 19th. Ran wanting to test him, calls Conan by his real name Shinichi to which Conan responds to. Conan tries to play it off by saying she is being weird and playing with Game Man, but internally, he is shaken up as he doesn't want to put Ran and her family in danger. Ran is not convinced and tried to think how this could be possible when she remembers the night they first met and she confessed she likes Shinichi.

While playing the Game Man, the name Ogino Tomoya comes up as a previous player. Ogino Tomoya is listed in the patient records as having died three years ago on February 19th at the age of five after Ogawa operated on him. With little time to spare, Conan tells Ran (not Ran-neechan) to quickly call Ogawa and it is revealed the boy came in too late and had left appendicitis untreated for too long. Conan reveals the sender (Ogino) has been sending mementos of his son and that they plan to take Yuuta's life on the same day of Tomoya's death.

They learn that Yuuta has disappeared from kindergarten. We then see Yuuta with Ogino who promises to send Yuuta to a "fun place" afterwards. He then pulls out a knife and promises his son, he will soon send over a friend so he won't be sad or alone. Conan uses his enhanced sneakers to kick a nearby soccer ball, breaking through the metal rails and hitting Ogino's hand. Ran witnesses Conan's actions which enhances her suspicions. Ogino then takes Yuuta hostage and it is revealed the 25 million yen he had sent is the life insurance money left from Tomoya's death and that Morning Glorys were Tamoya's favorite flower. Ogawa asks Ogino to spare his son and take his life instead. Yuuta then turns, thanking Ogino for the gifts, reminding him of the son he had lost. The two parties decide not to contact the police and settle the matter in that park. Still suspicious, Ran shares with Conan that their high school teacher is getting married and catches him off guard once again. Locking the door, she confronts him when the phone suddenly rings. On the other end is Shinichi's voice, courtesy of Professor Agasa and the voice-changing bowtie. Ran is no longer suspicious and it is a close-call for Shinichi.
